Welcome to Basel!

Badminton Swiss Open 2014

The Badminton Swiss Open 2014 will take place from 11th till 16th of March. Don't miss it!

Second european involvement

Unfortunately the British Men's Doubles couldn't succeed and qualify for tomorrow's finals.

Sung Hyun Ko and Lee Yong Dae from Korea, had a too stable defense. It took Adcock/Ellis much effort to place a point, mostly an unforced error was the consequence. But in both sets Chris Adcock and Andrew Ellis could catch up with the Koreans and reached a score of 21:19.

Especially in the second set an exploit woud have been deserved. Closing up from a two-point backlog to 19:19 was hard work, the Koreans were interested in a fast finish rather than playing a third set.

In the end the two Englanders made too many unforced errors and Sung Hyun Ko/Lee Yong Dae got their ticket to the finals with 21:19 and 21:19.

First Chinese finalist

Pengyu Du from China, set number one at Basel, won his semi finals match versus Yun Hu (HKG).

The first set was quite fastly decided, Hu tried everything to get into the match but nothing worked. In the second one he dominated his opponent, but had to defend his lead more than once. By winning this set he got himself into the game and attanced in the third one totally.

Until the score of 8:8 he could keep up with Du without any problems, in parts he even could take over the lead. After changing the side Du was able to distance the player from Honkong and bit by bit he came closer and closer to the qualification.

After 63 minutes it was reality: Pengyu Du plays in tomorrow's finals. Yun Hu finished this year's BSO with 8:21, 21:17 and 14:21.

Short overview of today's games...

It was a fine day for the European contestants today. In the Mixed-Doubles the Germans FUCHS/MICHELS made it to the Semi-Finals by eliminating the number 3 seeded RIJAL/SUSANTO (INA) in three sets.

In the same discipline FISCHER NIELSEN/PEDERSEN from Denmark won against the their opponents from England in two straight sets.

Their fellow countrymen ADCOCK/ELLIS also beat the pair from Chinese Taipei in Mens-Doubles.

Last but not least the Danish PEDERSEN/RYTTER JUHL joined the group of Semi-Finalists. Their opponents from Indonesia didn't have much of a chance.

Finally Jan O JOERGENSEN (DEN) faced some more opposition from his Malaysian competitor Wei Feng CHONG. After a weak start he managed to turn around the game and won in three sets 13-21 21-14 21-14.

A glimpse on the courts...

While the quarter-finals where still played on two courts, there will be only one for two remaining days...

Men's Singles have started

At about 6 o'clock the doubles categories are finished, now it's time to start the singles. There, too, we find some Swiss names.

Nicolas Blondel started the tournament facing Hans-Kristian Vittinghus, the set number 8 in Basel. A really tough job, but the youngster made it as hard as possible to the Dane. He returned and placed some amazing points, but it was a onesided match right from the start. In the first set Blondel scratched the magical 10 points with aa 21:9 loss. The second run was even more clear. So the match and for Blondel the tournament ended with the score of 9:21 and 8:21.

The BSO went on for the local fans with Lukas Nussbaumer versus Yun Hu (HKG). There, too, the swiss player had to face a top set opponent, this time it was the number 3 of the tournament. Again we saw a hard fighting native, trying to be the grinch. In the first set Nussbaumer cracked the ten-points-limit with 10:21, in the second one he was not so lucky anymore and had to finish the adventure BSO at 9:21.

The third in the row is Kyrill Schaffluetzel. Eric Pang (NED) had an easy walk-through and got himself into the next round with 21:1 and 21:14.
