Defeat for the top seeds in the mixed doubles

On the day of the round of 16 matches (12 March 2026), several players and pairs managed to prevail against the favourites at the YONEX Swiss Open 2026.

The most prominent losers were the top seeds in the mixed doubles: China's Guo Xin Wa/Chen Fang Hui (world ranking 7) lost 21-16, 18-21, 17-21 to Thailand's Pakkapon Teeraratsakul/Sapsiree Taerattanachai (world ranking 21) after 61 minutes of play.

The seventh-seeded Taiwanese pair Ye Hong Wei/Nicole Gonzales Chan (world ranking 12), who won the title at the YONEX All England Open in Birmingham, England, last week, had to withdraw from their round of 16 match in Basel at short notice. This meant that Zhu Yi Jun/Li Qian from China (world ranking 74) automatically reached the round of the best eight mixed doubles.

Another notable success on Thursday was achieved by the Danes Mads Vestergaard/Christine Busch (world ranking 18): The runners-up at the YONEX German Open 2026 defeated the number five seeded Thai mixed pair Ruttanapak Oupthong/Jhenicha Sudjaipraparat (world ranking 15) 15:21, 21:16, 21:15.

In the women's singles, the tournament is over for Thailand's Pornpawee Chochuwong, seeded second. The world number eight lost to Denmark's Line Christophersen (world number 20) 18:21, 22:20, 21:23. The two players thrilled the audience at St. Jakobshalle for 68 minutes before the winner was decided.

The number six seed, Chiu Pin-Chian from Taiwan (ranked 13th in the world), lost to Pitchamon Opatniputh from Thailand (ranked 28th in the world) 10:21, 14:21.

In addition, Thailand's Busanan Ongbamrungphan (world number 16), seeded eighth, lost her round of 16 match to Japan's Riko Gunji (world number 24) 17-21, 14-21.
