Yuqi Shi's triumph
Yuqi Shi (CHN) entered the men's singles final as seeded number one and favourite for the title. Until now, Sai Praneeth Bhamidipati (IND) convinced with his steady and dominant performance. The final promised to be a very high levelled and enthralling encounter.
Neither Bhamidipati, nor Shi had a furious start - until 9-9 none of them could get ahead. Only a long string of successful attacks and strong defenses brought Bhamidibati ahead. But Shi would remain a persistent opponent and closed up. The Indian closed game one with the score of 21-19.
In game two the players continued to play on an equal level. Again, Bhamidipati attempted to take over the lead, but Shi kept up and eventually turned tables in his favour. 21-18 made a third game necessary.
Bhamidipati seemed more and more exhausted by the tournament. The number of unforced errors increased and for Shi the task of scoring got easier by the time. The Chinese number one convinced with his stamina and reliable play - he won the title with 19-21, 21-18 and 21-12.
